Be eco in the afterlife with an Ecopod Coffin
Ecopod coffins are recycled and biodegradable coffins that are completely non-toxic, enabling you to leave this planet with as little environmental impact as possible. Most coffins in use today are made of chipboard covered in laminate, but Ecopod coffins are made from naturally hardened, 100% recycled paper, making them biodegradable and suitable even for use in Greenfield sites. The revolutionary Ecopod coffin design is strong and light and available in two sizes and a range of colours including – of course! – green, (with a silver Celtic cross) as well as blue and, for those who would like a touch of bling even at the end, gold. Each Ecopod coffin comes with a calico mattress and carrying straps and can be delivered anywhere in the UK. While it may sound morbid thinking about death, choosing an Ecopod coffin – or informing loved ones that this would be your choice – allows you to make a conscious decision about how you want to exit the planet and enables you to minimise the environmental impact of that departure. We are becoming more and more aware of the cost to the environment of all of our choices throughout our lives, and even at the end of them. Ecopod coffins allow us to make that final decision one that respects the planet, so that even in death, we are helping protect the life left behind.

Climate Changing Literature
Without an appropriate education of the masses, steps to curb global warming would fail. Indeed, individual households are responsible for a significant proportion of the greenhouse gases that are pumped into the atmosphere. Unfortunately, as most people are already aware, these gases have caused a hole to be ripped through the Earth’s protective ozone layer, which is basically essential for life on the planet. Sadly, global efforts to reduce or even reverse the so-called greenhouse effect have proved entirely unsuccessful thus far. In fact, current data shows that the hole in the ozone layer has widened from 130,000 Sq km in 1979 to around 25,000,000 Sq km today, which is approximately the size of North America.
Although there are many possible explanations for the depletion of the ozone layer, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are considered to be among the chief culprits. As such, for the past couple of decades or so, the public has been taught the hazards of releasing CFCs into the atmosphere. Nowadays, the public is educated on larger issues relating to carbon emissions. However, is current awareness enough to overturn climate change? Unfortunately, the answer is probably a “no”.
Therefore, those people who are concerned about the rapidly developing problem of global warming, which no longer affects only future generations, would most likely be interested in reading up on the subject in more depth. Furthermore, doing so might also enable them to educate others on the matter. ‘Silent Spring’ by Rachel Carson, ‘So Shall We Reap’ by Colin Tudge, and ‘Six Degrees’ by Mark Lynas are useful materials for getting started on the subject, whilst ‘Grow Your Own Vegetables’ by Joy Larkham and ‘How Many Lightbulbs does it take to Change a Planet’ by Tony Juniper are designed for those who want to get their hands dirty. Or green.
Recycling car parts – from high fashion to life saving products
Handbags made out of licence plates may sound crazy, but company LittleEarth is turning old car parts into eco-fashion. Even with the rise of greener motoring solutions such as the Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius, motoring remains one of the least environmentally friendly – but generally most necessary – pastimes. But around the world people are making an eco-virtue of this necessity. LittleEarth was founded in 1993 to recycle old car parts to create beautiful and fashionable bags. They use old American licence plates to create beautiful, stylish metal bags that retail at around £100-200, and are perfect for a night on the town. They come in a range of styles, with some making a design virtue of their origins, while others – such as the ‘More Shoes’, ‘Lace Wallpaper’ or ‘Cocktail Time’ bags – are designed to be more high fashion. Each one comes with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity, so you can be sure your gorgeous handbag really is made from recycled car parts. With party season fast approaching, they are the perfect winter accessory.
If all this sounds too frivolous, it’s good to hear that ethical design collective Design That Matters has been working on a way to use recycled car parts to build neo-natal incubators for developing countries, and has already delivered a prototype for further development. So from fashion to health, the by-products – and waste products – of the motor industry are being reused for eco-friendly purposes, and that’s something we can all get behind.
Zambikes – Bamboo bikes made in Zambia
Helping to improve the environment is something that everybody can achieve on a day-to-day basis. In fact, if the world is to change for the better it can only realistically be achieved and sustained if everyone contributes.
Environmental problems, however, are often rooted in worldwide economic practices and intercontinental industrial patterns. Indeed, the developing nations are those which the developed world turns to for cheap labour, under priced materials and extensive manufacturing.
Unfortunately, by doing so, the developed nations condemn them to decades of economic dependence that serves to produce an unskilled and uneducated workforce that barely earns enough money to feed itself. As a natural consequence, these developing nations are unable to combat environmental problems to the extent that
developed nations can.
Thus, when an opportunity arises to buy eco-friendly products on fair trade terms from a developing nation, it should be grasped with enthusiasm. One such example is that of Zambikes, which is a bicycle manufacturing company that has been recently established in Zambia. Zambikes offers a very specific range of bicycles: those made from bamboo! Indeed, Zambikes builds high quality bicycle frames completely out of local bamboo reserves, in addition to plant fibre cords used in assembly and varnish for finishing. It
takes around one week to build the frame and add the wheels, brakes, etc., and Zambikes employs local craftsmen to complete the work rather than carbon-emitting machinery. Not only does this serve to virtually eliminate the company’s carbon footprint, it keeps much of its revenue in the local Zambian community. Zambikes are expected to hit the US, European and worldwide markets in the near future.
There’s also a good article about Zambikes on the BBC website here
